OLYMPIA, WA — Officials have processed nearly 5,000 marijuana business applications in Washington state, and they have more to go.

Washington’s Liquor Control Board released updated figures Tuesday, saying it had received 4,946 applications to grow, process or sell cannabis under Washington’s recreational pot law passed by voters last year.

The applications include 1,312 proposed retail outlets. The state is planning to cap the number of pot shops at 334 statewide, so some areas are expected to face a lottery for retail licenses.

There were also 2,113 applications growing licenses and 1,512 processing applications.

The application window closed Dec. 20, but there’s still a backlog of submissions officials are working through.

Washington’s retail marijuana stores are expected to open in the spring.
