California Gov. Jerry Brown: We Can’t Legalize Marijuana and Still Have a Great Nation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — California Gov. Jerry Brown said he is not sure legalizing marijuana is a good idea in his state because the country could lose its competitive edge if too many people are getting stoned.

If pot smoking gains more legitimacy in the nation’s most populous state, Brown said he worries it could have negative ripple effects.

“The problem with anything, a certain amount is OK. But there is a tendency to go to extremes,” he said in a wide-ranging interview aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And all of a sudden, if there’s advertising and legitimacy, how many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation?”

Californians voted to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. But Brown said he is watching closely to see how Colorado and Washington handle their new laws that go a step further by regulating the growth and sale of taxed recreational marijuana at state-licensed stores. Colorado’s pot shops opened Jan. 1, and Washington’s are expected to open later this year.

“We have medical marijuana, which gets very close to what they have in Colorado and Washington. I’d really like those two states to show us how it’s going to work,” he said. “The world’s pretty dangerous, very competitive. I think we need to stay alert, if not 24 hours a day, more than some of the potheads might be able to put together.”

Brown, who was interviewed remotely from San Francisco, also discussed California’s drought problems, climate change and his future political career.

Brown is currently seeking re-election this November as California’s governor.

Coming from a coke head thats just funny.

  • bobo willams

Sorry Brown your not going to get re-elected with that old way of thinking … especially labeling cancer patients and successful people who use cannabis as “potheads”

  • Little Ricky

    Jaided worthless Old Man…

  • Dusty Relic

I have news for you Governor Moonbeam: anyone in California who has any intention whatsoever of using cannabis is already doing it.

  • Bubbles

“But there is a tendency to go to extremes,” he said”

Yeah, like the way they kick in your door and kill innocent people in an effort to stop people from smiling.

Pick your head out of your ass Gov. The time is now.

    He makes Arnold look good.

Somehow, we manage to have a great nation with marijuana being mostly
illegal, yet widely and cheaply available. I think Gov. Moonbeam is
looking at the glass being half empty, rather than half-full.

Imagine what a great nation we could be if we ended prohibition.

These leaves aside the way marijuana aids the creative process.
California has entire industries devoted to imaginative creation of
alternative realities, which depend on the availability of reefer to one
degree or another. Brown may want to pretend that’s not the case, but
    it is/

And how exactly does locking up mostly minority youth over cannabis
make us a great nation? It doesn’t. It’s one of those things holding us
back from being a great nation.

And Brown is a Democrat? This just demonstrates how badly the end of
prohibition threatens the good ol’ boy network in the Democratic Party.
It time for some new blood and new ideas, not a stale rehash of
    Nixon-era policies from Democrats.

They voted him in, now they can vote him out.

Maybe if you legalize and let people have their freedoms… they might just surprise you with responsibility

  • ABear AndtheLion

I am not for the man formerly known as the Gov. Jeryy Brown

  • GeekyGranny

BY legalizing cannabis WE BECOME A GREAT NATION!!! We become destressed, great thinkers, focused on what is important, diseased ridden, healthy, intelligent, and peaceful!

  • Andy Voter

Brown is 75 years old. Our two senators are 80 and 73 years old. Brown is basically running for reelection unopposed. They are all Prohibitionist and will never get my vote but we have very little chance of legalization via legislation and the Initiatives are not doing well for 2014. Unless Obama waves his magic wand it will be 2016.

  • skunkbear

Did he say” BAD NIPPLE EFFECT”? Jeez that’s a new one on me.

  • Tom Paine

How do these dunces keep getting re-elected?

  • Little Ricky

Who the hell voted for this ass clown…,

A plain speaking Cannabis Bigot…I guess he gets credit for his honesty.
